  38. "Modem not responding" has nothing to do with UART's.  Anyway, you haven't
  39. told us how you tried to set the baud (DTE) rate to 57600 (in Trumpet, you 
  40. do it in the trumpet setup screen) and why you think that won't work.

  42. (p.s. Without a 16550, the main result of that DTE setting would be
  43. alot of overruns, and probably freezing up), but you'd never get a 
  44. "modem not responding" message.
